Let’s Reset:
at the Steel Horse
You've been giving a lot.
This is three days to stop.
October 16-18, 2026,
a creative reset
Steel Horse, Villa Grove, CO
No tech · Sober · Full venue buyout · Rain or shine
You know what it's like out there right now.
The tightness. The alotness of it. The way grief has become ambient, like a hum you've learned to function inside of. The way rest feels like something to earn. The way making something for no reason feels almost irresponsible. The way you can be doing everything right and still feel like you're holding your breath. The way play feels almost suspicious.
“There is no way to repress pleasure and expect liberation, satisfaction, or joy.”
And she's right. And it's also true that the world makes repressing it feel reasonable. Responsible, even. Like now is not the time.
Replace "poetry" with "art." Replace "art" with "rest." Replace "rest" with "fire circle, dance party, rage paint, creek." The same argument.
But now is always the time. And the women who can stay soft enough to feel things, who can rest, who can make something for no reason, who can grieve in community, who can play, who can dance by a fire (if allowed at the time) on a Saturday in October in Colorado, those women are not checking out.
They are practicing how to stay.
That's what this retreat is for. Not escape. Sustenance. The kind that lets you go back.
Women have always known that creating, grieving, resting, and gathering in circle is not separate from the work of survival. It is the work.
“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.”
This isn't a wellness weekend.
There's no have to itinerary built to keep you busy.
There are suggestions and invitations for you to join if you feel called.
We rage paint on a Friday night. Collage the person we're done being. Press a leaf into wet canvas without knowing why until later. Sit in circle. Have a dance party by the fire. Sleep at 8,500 feet under more stars than you're used to.
And there's just time. Walks. The creek. Hammocks. Morning before anyone else is awake.
“We stumble, we trip, we fall down, we get up. The body transforms, the mind transforms, everything transforms. Wherever you start and witness transformation, take it into all aspects of your life.
Let it seep in.”
Not fix you. Not graduate you. Just let something seep in. The thing that's ready this time, on this pass.
Maybe you've done work like this before. Read the books. Sat in the circles. And here you are again, looking at something that feels almost familiar but isn't quite the same thing.
That's not failure. adrienne maree brown calls change non-linear and iterative. The lesson doesn't come once. It comes as many times as you're ready to receive a new layer of it.
“Identity, like a river, is always changing, always in transition. You begin to define yourself in terms of who you are becoming, not who you have been.”
“All that you touch, you change.
All that you change, changes you.
The only lasting truth is Change.”
You're not the same person who went to the last retreat. You won't be the same person who leaves this one. The process is the point. It always has been.
Women have always known what making does.
This retreat stands in a lineage of women who have insisted that art, rest, grief, play, and community are not frivolous. They are how we survive. They are how we transform.
They are how we come back to ourselves and to each other.
“When I write, it feels like I’m carving bone. My soul makes itself through the creative act.
”
“Our feelings are our most genuine paths to knowledge.
”
Different backgrounds. Different bodies. Different struggles. The same insistence: that the inner life is not separate from the political life. That what happens inside a woman and femme and non binary folks, in a circle, around a fire, on a canvas matters.
“Matter doesn’t disappear, it transforms. The earth is layer upon layer of all that has existed, remembered by the dirt.
”
““Within every woman there is a wild and natural creature, a powerful force, filled with good instincts, passionate creativity, and ageless knowing.”
”
This is for you:
✓You've been running on empty and can't figure out how to stop.
✓You keep meaning to make something and haven't.
✓You've done retreats before and wonder if you should be further along by now. That thought is the sign. The spiral doesn't move in a straight line. You're not behind.
✓You're in the middle of something — a transition, a loss, a becoming — and you want a container that isn't just more journaling alone.
✓You care about the world, show up for other people, feel the weight of what's happening. Rest and play and grief in community are not separate from that work. They are how you continue.
✓Three days without your phone sounds like relief.
Probably not for you if you want an art class with technique instruction, if you need alcohol to relax, if you need outcomes to be clear before you begin. The outcomes aren't clear beforehand.
That's the point.
“Creativity is the ability to respond to all that goes on around us, to choose from the hundreds of possibilities of thought, feeling, action, and reaction that arise within us, and to put these together in a unique response that carries moment, passion and meaning.
